Corn Snake Care Instructions

About:

Corn Snake (Pantherophis guttatus) (Colubridae) sometimes called the Red Rat Snake. Native to North America.

Personalities:

Friendly and docile, making them fantastic beginner pets. They rarely display aggression and are easy to handle. They may attempt to bite if they feel threatened. They generally tolerate being handled and form a positive association with their caretakers.

Lifespan:

20 to 25 years. Be prepared to commit to a “family member”. Size: When born will be roughly 8-14 inches in length and weigh about 10-20 grams. Adults will range 60-72 inches and weigh 1 – 3 pounds.

Diet:

Corns eat mice (occasionally rats). Most are willing to eat frozen/thawed in lieu of live making the owners life easier. Proper sizing is key to a healthy feeding for your corn snake. See chart below.

Habitat:

Corns should be housed separately. Glass terrariums with 3 of the 4 sides blocked out are ideal. Metal/mesh top with a locking lid as they are masters at escaping. Snakes cannot regulate their own body temperature so they require a proper set-up. A heating element is essential such as a basking light providing a basking surface of 80-90 degrees and a cooler side of 75-80 degrees. Humidity levels should be between 40-60%. Plenty of hides, shrubs and things to climb on. Thermostats should be used. Substrate such as aspen bedding or coco husks. A large water bowl to drink and soak in.

Tips for your new “Family Member”

• Let them settle in the first couple of weeks before attempting to handle them.

• Pick up slowly. Fast movements can startle them.

• Do not handle for 48 hours after feeding to prevent regurgitation.
